DISASTER  CLASS  SCHEDULE

March - June   2008 
 

All classes are offered at the Collier County American Red Cross office at 2610 Northbrooke Plaza Drive in North Naples, unless otherwise noted.  There is no charge for disaster classes, but all participants are expected to phone the office at 596-6868 to register.  Classes with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled four days before the scheduled class.  If you wish to take a class, it is important that you sign up ahead of time.  If you are not signed up, we cannot notify you of changes in the schedule.

It is suggested that new volunteers begin with an online session of Introduction to Disaster Services. This class may be taken at home using the Internet:  http://www2.redcross.org/flash/course01_v01/ 
 
 

THE RED CROSS NATIONAL VOLUNTEER CORPS –    DISASTER SERVICES HUMAN RESOURCES

      Tuesday, March 11, 2008   7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

This informal presentation provides an opportunity for local volunteers to learn about the procedures and policies of the Red Cross National Volunteer Corps.  Members are Red Cross volunteers willing to assist in other areas of the United States when a major disaster hits.  Volunteers serve in many different capacities: ERV drivers, shelter workers, client assistance caseworkers……all of the functions of local disaster response.  Any volunteer interested in joining this group will benefit from this explanation.  No prerequisite.

ARMED FORCES EMERGENCY SERVICES WORKSHOP

Thursday, March 13, 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Emergency communications between American service personnel and their families are channeled through the American Red Cross.  Notification of sudden illness or death of a family member, birth of a child, or other urgent message from families to service men or women goes first to trained Red Cross volunteers who are available twenty-four hours every day.  This course offers a short training program to prepare local volunteers to provide this service from their own homes, using Red Cross-provided cell phones.

FULFILLING OUR MISSION:

TRANSLATING YOUR COMPASSION INTO COMMUNITY ACTION

 Thursday, March 27, 2008      6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

This basic course introduces potential disaster volunteers to the principles, values, and mission of the American Red Cross.  Participants are encouraged to assess their skills and determine preferred areas of service within the framework of the Red Cross.  The course clarifies the work of the American Red Cross and provides helpful information about other service agencies that assist as effective partners in community response to local disasters.  No prerequisites.  
 
 

WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION -- AN OVERVIEW

Tuesday, April 15, 2008            10:00 a.m. - noon

In any incident involving weapons of mass destruction, special procedures and policies are imposed.  Red Cross protocols are quite specific and Red Cross local function leadership should be aware of these restrictions.  Function Chairs are urged to attend this workshop.  Any volunteer interested in this aspect of disaster response is welcome to participate in this tabletop exercise.  This workshop is especially important for those participating in the countywide airport drill. 
 

COUNTYWIDE DISASTER RESPONSE EXERCISE

Many agencies including governmental and non-profit groups will participate in a disaster response drill on this date.  Red Cross involvement will include ERV drivers, Mass Care workers, Disaster Mental Health workers, Health Services volunteers, and many supplementary volunteers.  If you are interested in participating, call the Chapter to register for this event.

MASS CARE OVERVIEW  

Thursday, May 8, 2008   6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

This course introduces participants to the several activities of Mass Care, chiefly feeding, bulk distribution, and sheltering.  Video and discussions assist new volunteers develop an awareness of the Red Cross response needed when a brush fire strikes a limited area of the community or a hurricane threatens.  Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Service, which can be taken on line, or Fulfilling Our Mission.

DISASTER ASSESSMENT WORKSHOP        

Wednesday, May 21, 2008       6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

This workshop prepares volunteers to provide an orderly survey of damage to the community following a flood, hurricane, or other emergency.  The information gathered through this function allows Red Cross to make a clear estimate of damage and recovery needs.  Volunteers actually count the numbers of destroyed and damaged homes.  Pre-requisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services, taken on line, or Fulfilling Our Mission.

SHELTER OPERATIONS

Tuesday, June 10, 2008     6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.               

Shelter Operations trains volunteers to run efficient shelters, should our community be threatened.  Notification procedures for volunteers and client registration forms are discussed.  Video segments, showing feeding and sheltering situations, provide the basis for group discussion.  Shelter kits are examined.  Experienced shelter workers will relate experiences from recent local hurricane shelter experiences.  Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Service, which can be taken on line, or Fulfilling Our Mission.

CLIENT CASEWORK: PROVIDING EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE   

Tuesday, June 17 and Thursday, June 19, 2008     6:-00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.            

This two-session class enables Red Cross volunteers to meet the emergency disaster-caused needs of families on an individual basis following a fire, flood, or other disaster.  The course is designed to develop interviewing skills and assure familiarity with Red Cross procedures and policies in providing food, clothing, and housing for disaster victims.  You learn exactly what you can offer disaster victims to help in the recovery process.  Role-playing and discussion are components of the class. This course is required for all new members of the Disaster Action Team.   Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Service, which can be taken on line, or Fulfilling Our Mission.

LOGISTICS: AN OVERVIEW         

Thursday, June 26, 2008     600 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

The purpose of this course is to provide basic information to participants about the activities and processes of the Logistics function in support of a disaster relief operation.  The Logistics function deals with facilities, transportation and supplies for every disaster function.  Logistics provides the equipment and materials needed to accomplish the task of disaster relief; every other function is dependent on the efficiency of the Logistics workers.   Pre-requisite:  Introduction to Disaster Services on line or Fulfilling Our Mission.
